Outdoor Education NW was formed in 2015 as a partnership between Aled Butler and Graham Little.

Between them Aled and Graham have nearly 60 years combined experience of delivering Outdoor and Adventurous activities to a diverse range of client groups. We are supported by an experienced and very well qualified team od additional instructors from a diverse and varied background.

We believe that our greatest strength comes from our extensive background, which combines our delivery experience with many years of teaching in schools, and managing Outdoor Education at a senior level within the Local Authority.

We are especially aware of the issues you might face when organising educational visits for your young people, and will work with you to make the whole process run as smoothly as possible, whilst of course getting the best possible results.

Graham spent 15 years teaching in schools before escaping to set up Outdoor Education NW.

After teaching PE in secondary schools for 10 years, Graham took on the role of Head of Outdoor Learning at a large primary school for 700 pupils, which he held for 5 years. During this time The Blackpool Challenge Partnership described his delivery of outdoor education as "the jewel in the crown of education provision".

Additional experience:

  • School EVC

  • NCPD Tutor for Physical Education

  • Course Director for the Outdoor Education Advisers Panel

  • Member of the Select Committee of the Association of British Climbing Walls Training Trust (who manage NICAS/NIBAS climbing awards schemes).

Aled has worked in Outdoor Education full time since 1994.

He has worked extensively across most areas of the industry, including leading overseas expeditions, and as a civilian trainer with the military.

Prior to establishing OENW however the vast majority of his work however was within  the Local Authority, as an instructor in the early days, before  moving into senior management.

Aled spent 3 years as the Deputy Head of a large LEA outdoor centre, and another 3 years as the Head of Centre.  He has been part of the Local Authority Ed. Visits approval team, and has served on the Technical Advisor team for Climbing and Mountaineering for the LA.

He is currently the Technical Advisor for Climbing for several schools and academies across the North West.
